  1.     CREATE CUSTOM PRINTER MODEL
  2.  
  3.     Custom Driver
  4.  
  5.     You can use this program to define custom printer models or drivers. Each 
  6.     type of printer has its own characteristics; a laser printer needs to map 
  7.     the print commands differently than a dot matrix style of printer. Use the 
  8.     Custom Driver window to create different types of printer drivers.
  9.  
  10.     The following sections detail the fields and their formats for the options 
  11.     shown in the Custom Driver window.

  13.     Printer Model Name
  14.  
  15.     The Printer Model Name is a unique name which refers to this particular 
  16.     printer driver. This name is usually related to the model of printer, for 
  17.     example a `Raven PR 9101' might be called rav9101. Enter the Printer Model 
  18.     Name here.

  20.     Printer Description
  21.  
  22.     This field can be used to give a brief description of the driver.
  23.  
  24.     Printer Use
  25.  
  26.     This field represents how the printer will be used. If it will be used for 
  27.     printing text fields and graphic designs or charts, the interface will 
  28.     have to include a graphic module. If the printer is only to be used for 
  29.     text, then only the text module is required.
  30.     Using the left mouse button, click on the option button to display the 
  31.     following list of options:
  32.         + For Text Only (the default) 
  33.         + Text or Graphics 
  34.         + Other
  35.  
  36.     If data sent to the printer will be already formatted for that printer, the 
  37.     Text or Graphics selection should be chosen. This is typical of 
  38.     applications such as word processors or drawing programs where the printer 
  39.     type can be selected at print time. The application will then prepare its 
  40.     output for the chosen printer.
  41.     If, however, the printer is to be used for the printing of plain text, then 
  42.     the For Text Only selection should be chosen. If the text must be 
  43.     manipulated before it is sent to the printer, you can use the OPTIONS 
  44.     section to specify what pre-printing manipulations should occur. See the 
  45.     following subsections for more details

  47.     Printer Interface
  48.  
  49.     The Printer Interface defines what type of hardware interface is needed for 
  50.     the printer to work properly. Different types of printers require different 
  51.     types of interfaces. The interface may be:
  52.         + Serial (the default) 
  53.         + Parallel 
  54.         + Data Products 
  55.         + Other
  56.  
  57.     The most common of these is Serial or Parallel. Using the left mouse 
  58.     button, click on the appropriate printer interface. Refer to your printer 
  59.     manual for more information what interface is required.
  60.     If the printer interface selected is Serial, then additional information 
  61.     will be required to properly setup the serial interface. The information 
  62.     required is:
  63.         + Baud rate - The speed at which the printer will send and receive 
  64.           data. Click on the appropriate baud rate. 
  65.         + Parity - Select the parity the printer will be using. The options are 
  66.           Odd, Even, or None. 
  67.         + Character Size - The size of the byte the printer uses. The two 
  68.           options are 7 bit or 8 bits. 
  69.         + Stop Bits - The stop bits setting for the printer. The two options 
  70.           are 1 bit or 2 bits. 
  71.         + Flow Control - This is how the printer recognizes signals from the 
  72.           operating system. The flow control tells the system if the printer is 
  73.           ready to receive information or if it is busy printing. This field is 
  74.           hardware dependent on the serial boards installed in the machine. 
  75.           Most serial printers use Xon/Xoff flow control.

  77.     Note: All of the flow control options are dependent on the serial board's 
  78.     capabilities. Not all flow control options are supported on all serial 
  79.     (TTY) boards.
  80.     Please check your printer manual for complete information regarding the 
  81.     serial interface settings.

  83.     Options

  85.     You can use the options area for any pre-printing manipulation this custom 
  86.     printer driver needs.
  87.         + Printer type -  Select the PostScript button if the printer is 
  88.           running PostScript emulation. Otherwise select the ASCII button.
  89.         + Include a banner page -  An optional banner page can be added to 
  90.           output to identify individual printer jobs by selecting the Yes 
  91.           option.
  92.         + Map NL to CR/NL - For some printer emulations, such as HPCL, the 
  93.           carriage return (CR) character must be mapped to CR/NL (New line) for 
  94.           proper output of lines of text. For these emulators, select the Yes 
  95.           button.
  96.         + Map lowercase to uppercase - Select Yes for printers which only 
  97.           print in upper-case mode (typically band printers) or if you want 
  98.           all upper-case output.
  99.         + Additional form-feeds - When the print job is finished, the printer 
  100.           driver will output up to five additional form feeds to advance the 
  101.           paper.
  102.           The default value is zero. Enter or select a new value as desired.
  103.         + Number of lines per page - Enter the number of lines of text for a 
  104.           single page. This information is used in determining when a page 
  105.           ends. The default value is 66. Enter or select a new value as needed.
  106.         + Number of columns per page - Enter the number of characters to fit 
  107.           onto a single line of text. This information is used in determining 
  108.           where to wrap text to a new line. The default value is 80; enter or 
  109.           select a new value as required.

  111.     Buttons
  112.     This window contains the following buttons:

  114.     Apply
  115.  
  116.     When you have completed filling in this window, click on the Apply button. 
  117.     A pop-up window will appear confirming the creation of the new printer 
  118.     model. Then you can assign it to a device in the Printer Configuration 
  119.     window.

  123.     Click on this button to clear the existing choices in all fields.

  127.     Pop down the window without performing any other action.
